BETTENDORF, IO – Dr. Nikhil Wagle, a physician, small business owner and former school board member from Bettendorf, is running for the Iowa Senate in a race the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) has singled out among its 10 key contests ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The race is part of a wider effort by the DLCC, the Democratic Party committee focused on state legislative elections. The committee says it is targeting more than 500 districts nationwide this year and is using race-by-race data to determine where to focus its resources.
Iowa has drawn particular attention after Democrats won a series of special elections in 2025, including in Republican-held districts. The DLCC says those victories broke the Republican supermajority in the Iowa Senate after nearly a decade of full Republican control.
Democrats are seeking to hold on to those Senate gains in 2026 while also making targeted gains in the Iowa House.
Wagle’s Senate District 47 race is among the contests the DLCC has highlighted as it works to build Democratic representation in state legislatures.
Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to first generation immigrant parents, Wagle attended University of Wisconsin for both his undergraduate and medical school education and then went on to Duke University to complete his ophthalmology training before moving to Bettendorf to begin his career and where he has lived for 26 years. He has also served as an elected school board member. His campaign has focused on public education and health care access.
Married for 30 years to his wife, also a physician, Wagle is the father of two sons, one a public-school teacher in Cedar Rapids, the other a dental student at the University of Iowa.
