US Educated Sanjay Malhotra To Head Reserve Bank Of India

NEW DELHI – Sanjay Malhotra, a 1990-batch Indian Administrative Service officer from the Rajasthan cadre, has been appointed as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. The announcement was made by the government on December 4, with Malhotra set to take charge on December 6 for a three-year term.

Malhotra brings a strong academic and professional background to the role. A graduate in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, he also holds a Master’s in Public Policy from Princeton University in New Jersey.

With a career spanning over 33 years, Sanjay Malhotra has served in key sectors such as power, finance, taxation, information technology, and mines. Before his appointment as Revenue Secretary, he held the position of Secretary in the Department of Financial Services, where he played a pivotal role in shaping tax policies for both direct and indirect taxation.

Malhotra will succeed Shaktikanta Das, whose tenure concludes on December 5. Das has served as the 25th Governor of the RBI since December 12, 2018, following the abrupt resignation of his predecessor, Urjit Patel.

Malhotra’s appointment signals a continued focus on leveraging seasoned expertise in public policy and governance to steer the country’s central bank.
