ANNAPOLIS, MD – Lieutenant Governor Aruna K. Miller, supported by the Maryland Artificial Intelligence (AI) Subcabinet, the Maryland Department of Information Technology (DoIT), and the Maryland Higher Education Commission, hosted a State and Academia AI Roundtable to explore collaborative opportunities in AI.

The summit brought together leaders from state agencies, academic institutions, and industry experts to identify shared interests and develop short-, medium-, and long-term strategies for collaboration. Discussions focused on leveraging AI to enhance efficiencies and drive economic development.

“Our goal is simple: get the best, most brilliant minds in the same room to foster innovation,” said Lt. Governor Miller. “Maryland aims to be a national leader in AI research and talent development, laying the groundwork for success in the coming decade.”

Attendees included representatives from prominent institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, UMBC, Morgan State, and the University of Maryland. The day featured strategy discussions, brainstorming sessions, and workshops designed to identify practical collaboration opportunities.

Nishant Shah, Maryland’s Senior Advisor for Responsible AI, emphasized the potential of AI to improve state productivity and services. “To realize that ambition, we’ll need deep partnerships across sectors and a strengthened AI ecosystem,” he stated. “Maryland is fortunate to have leading academic institutions conducting cutting-edge applied research in AI.”

Dr. Sanjay Rai, Maryland Secretary of Higher Education, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the eagerness of the higher education community to work with industry and legislative partners. “With our robust ecosystem of universities and technology companies, Maryland is uniquely positioned to lead in this AI-driven era,” he said, reinforcing the commitment to driving innovation through research and development.
