SAN FRANCISCO, CA – OpenAI has appointed Aaron “Ronnie” Chatterji, a professor of business and public policy at Duke University, as its first ever Chief Economist. This strategic move aims to delve into the economic implications of artificial intelligence (AI) on global markets, job creation, and industry growth. Chatterji brings extensive experience from both academia and government, having served in the Obama and Biden administrations.

In his new role, Chatterji will lead research on how AI is transforming the economy, with a particular focus on its effects on employment and long-term productivity. His expertise is expected to help guide businesses and policymakers in navigating the opportunities and challenges presented by AI technology.

Before joining OpenAI, Chatterji was the CHIPS coordinator in the Biden administration, overseeing the $52 billion CHIPS and Science Act. His prior roles include serving as Chief Economist for the U.S. Department of Commerce and contributing to economic strategy on President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers.

Chatterji’s hiring comes at a critical juncture as OpenAI intensifies efforts to understand how AI can foster sustainable growth across various sectors.
