On Wedding Anniversary, Pramila Jayapal Cruises To Primary Win

SEATTLE, WA – Incumbent Representative and progressive trailblazer Pramila Jayapal marked a personal milestone on August 5, celebrating her 19th wedding anniversary, just hours after securing a decisive victory in Washington state’s congressional primary and advancing to the November general election.

In a social media post, Jayapal shared a tribute to her husband, writing, “Celebrating 19 years since we tied that knot and placed those garlands on each other! I love this man so much: my partner, joy, adventure-seeker, companion, strategic thinker, support…all of it! … Happy anniversary, my love.”

Hours earlier, the five-term Democratic congresswoman won 83.3 percent of the vote in Washington’s 7th Congressional District primary, easily finishing first in the state’s top-two primary system. Republican Nirav Sheth placed second with 10.8 percent, while Democrat Gwen Kirkland received 3.4 percent. With just 53 percent of the vote counted, the Associated Press had already called the race, sending Jayapal and Sheth to the November 3 general election.

Washington uses an all-party primary system in which the top two vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation.

Following her victory, Jayapal thanked supporters and framed the result as a mandate for her policy priorities.

“This primary win belongs to all of us,” she wrote on social media. “I am so deeply grateful to every volunteer, organizer, and supporter who made this win possible. You showed what it looks like when people come together to fight for their communities—not corporate interests.”

She said her campaign is focused on “building lasting power for working families, protecting our democracy, and ensuring every voice is heard,” while calling for immigration reform, Medicare for All, and reducing the influence of corporate special interests and dark money in politics.

Jayapal, 60, was first elected to Congress in 2016 and made history as the first South Asian American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She represents most of Seattle and surrounding communities in one of the country’s most reliably Democratic congressional districts.

She will face Sheth, a former police officer turned businessman, in the November general election.
