SACRAMENTO, CA -Gurinder Singh Gill, 28, has been arrested on murder charges in connection with the death of his wife, Jasmine Gill, whose burned remains were found in California. During the investigation, he told authorities that U.S. immigration agents had taken her into custody, but the agency said it had conducted no enforcement activity at the couple’s home.
Jasmine, 30, was last seen at the couple’s Sacramento residence on Sept. 30, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Her cousin reported her missing on Oct. 4.
Burned human remains were discovered in El Dorado County on Oct. 1 and were later identified as Jasmine’s.
Gurinder told investigators that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had taken Jasmine away while she was checking the mail at home. Detectives contacted the agency, which said no enforcement activity had taken place at the residence.
Investigators found inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements and learned that the couple were going through a divorce and were involved in a child custody dispute, the sheriff’s office said.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant and searched two residences associated with Gurinder. He was arrested on Oct. 14 and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on murder charges. He is ineligible for bail, according to authorities.
Jasmine was a registered nurse and the mother of an eight-month-old boy, according to a fundraiser launched by her family member, Daman Gill. The campaign said she had been seeking a divorce and a fresh start for herself and her son.
The fundraiser is collecting donations to bring Jasmine’s body to India so her family can pay their last respects. The money will also support her son’s care and future, including potential legal expenses related to custody and his welfare.
