Dadasaheb Phalke Award A ‘Responsibility,’ Says Mohanlal

NEW DELHI- Actor Mohanlal has been honored with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Indian cinema’s highest recognition, at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony. The actor said the recognition was not only a catalyst for his artistic journey but also a responsibility, calling cinema the “heartbeat of his soul” and saying the award was a collective tribute to the Malayalam film industry.

Conferred by President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, the award celebrates Mohanlal’s illustrious four-decade-long career. Speaking before the ceremony, the actor reflected on his journey, saying, “Cinema is magic. To become successful, one has to be lucky, and I consider myself lucky. The blessings of my seniors are the reason for this.” He likened his artistic journey to water flowing steadily to the sea.

Mohanlal is the youngest recipient and only the second from the Malayalam film industry to receive this prestigious honor. He has previously won five National Awards, including one as a producer. His selection for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award highlights his immense contribution to Indian cinema and the global recognition Malayalam films have gained through his work.

Expressing his gratitude, he said, “This was never in my dreams. I am always thankful. This is a huge recognition for Malayalam cinema.” He dedicated the award to his film fraternity, his family, and the audience that has supported him, stating, “This is not a dream come true, this is something far greater. It’s magical, it’s sacred.”

Known for his iconic performances in films such as ‘Drishyam’, ‘Spadikam’, and ‘Bharatham’, Mohanlal continues to inspire audiences and aspiring filmmakers. He affirmed his commitment to cinema, adding that the award deepens his resolve and that he pledges to continue his journey with “renewed sincerity, passion, and purpose.” The awards for 2023 were organized by the NFDC and were announced on August 1, 2025.
