MUMBAI – After more than a decade since their last collaboration, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and acclaimed director Rajkumar Hirani are set to join forces once again—this time for a landmark biopic on the father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke.
The much-anticipated project, set against the backdrop of India’s Independence struggle, will chronicle the remarkable journey of Phalke, who is credited with laying the foundation of Indian cinema with his pioneering silent film Raja Harishchandra in 1913.
This film marks the duo’s first collaboration since their blockbuster hits 3 Idiots (2009) and PK (2014), both of which broke box office records and earned critical acclaim.
Hirani, along with longtime collaborator Abhijat Joshi and writers Hindukush Bharadwaj and Avishkar Bharadwaj, has reportedly been working on the script for the last four years.
The filmmakers aim to authentically recreate the era with the help of leading VFX studios from Los Angeles, who have already begun crafting AI-generated designs to transport viewers to early 20th-century India.
Adding a personal touch to the film, Phalke’s grandson, Chandrashekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar, has extended his full support and shared several intimate anecdotes and little-known facts about the legendary filmmaker’s life.
With shooting scheduled to begin in October 2025, the film is already generating significant buzz and is expected to be one of the most ambitious biopics.
