MUMBAI (ANI)- On the second day of the World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES) being held here, superstar Aamir Khan participated in a panel discussion titled “Studios of the Future: Putting India on the World Studio Map”. During the session, Aamir voiced his concerns over the shortage of theatres in India, emphasizing the need for more movie screens to match the country’s large population.

He compared the number of theatres in India to those in the US and China, highlighting the disparity. “India has around 10,000 screens, while the US—home to one-third of India’s population—boasts 40,000. China, on the other hand, has 90,000 screens,” said Aamir, pointing out that half of India’s 10,000 screens are concentrated in the South, leaving Hindi films with a maximum of 5,000 screens nationwide.

Aamir further stressed that despite India being a film-loving nation, only 2% of its population watches the biggest movie hits in theatres. He believes investing in theatres, particularly in under-served districts and towns, is crucial for the growth of Indian cinema.

“India has immense potential, but it can only be fully realized by expanding the number of theatres across the country. Without more screens, people will only hear about films, not experience them,” Aamir added.
