NEW DELHI – At a recent UK concert, Arijit Singh refused to perform his song Aar Kobe, which he composed following the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. The song has become an anthem during widespread protests over the tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month.

When a member of the audience requested the song, Singh responded, “This is not the place. People haven’t come here to protest, they have come to listen to me. That’s my job. What you’re saying is in my heart, but this is not the right time or place.” His comments, captured in a video shared on social media, highlight his belief that the song belongs in the context of activism, not entertainment.

Singh also encouraged those who felt strongly about the issue to take action: “If you really care, go to Kolkata. Gather people—there are a lot of Bengalis here—and take to the streets.” He then resumed his performance with Ramta Jogi from the 1999 film Taal.

Pausing once more, Singh added, “That song (Aar Kobe) is not monetized and never will be. Anyone can use it.”

Aar Kobe, which translates to “if not now, then when,” was recorded after the August 9 incident that shocked India. It calls on people to stand up for women’s safety and dignity. Within three weeks of its release, the Bengali song has amassed over 2 million views on YouTube.

On his official YouTube channel, Singh expressed hope for the song’s impact: “Let this song add to the chorus of dissent. May it be a voice of hope, a plea for justice, and a catalyst for change. Together, we can try to ensure such tragedies never happen again.”
