SACRAMENTO, CA – On June 9, the California State Assembly and Senate officially recognized the core tenets of Jainism, particularly its emphasis on peace and non-violence, or Ahimsa. The legislative tribute also commemorated significant milestones for the Jain Center of Northern California (JCNC): 50 years of community service by the organization and the 25th anniversary of its Jain Temple in Milpitas.
Assemblymember Alex Lee and Senator Dave Cortese held the proceedings, both acknowledging the JCNC’s dedication to compassion and unity. Lee lauded the JCNC as a “pillar of peace in Silicon Valley,” while Cortese delivered a tribute celebrating the center’s extensive community contributions.

The special occasion was led by Ajay Bhutoria, former Advisor to President Joe Biden and active community member, and co-hosted by Biren Shah. Bhutoria expressed his deep appreciation for the recognition. “In a world today shadowed by chaos, wars, and violence, Jain values and the message of Lord Mahavir and Acharya Mahashraman Ji of non-violence, compassion, and peace provide an essential path to harmony,” he stated. He added, “The Jain Center of Northern California, Milpitas, has cultivated peace, compassion, unity, and service within the community for over 50 years.”
Biren Shah highlighted the JCNC’s 25-year journey, underscoring its significant work in promoting interfaith dialogue, providing youth education, supporting local charities, and organizing community health initiatives. Shah noted, “The JCNC has been a steadfast beacon of hope, fostering cultural preservation and environmental stewardship through its innovative projects, classes on Jainism, community services activities and mindfulness workshops, which have enriched our community immensely.”
