LOS ANGELES, CA – Dev Patel’s debut directorial venture, the action thriller “Monkey Man,” has secured the second spot at the box office, earning $10.1 million trailing only behind ‘Godzilla X Kong’ which continues to dominate. In contrast, Disney and 20th Century’s supernatural prequel “The First Omen” has lagged behind at the fourth position with a subdued $8.4 million.
“Monkey Man” has received positive reception from both audiences and critics, boasting a “B+” CinemaScore and an 86% average on Rotten Tomatoes.
Both “Monkey Man” and “The First Omen” were originally intended for streaming platforms rather than theatrical releases, Variety reported. However, Universal Pictures acquired the rights to “Monkey Man” for $10 million after filmmaker Jordan Peele, whose production company has a distribution deal with Universal, recognized its potential for a theatrical run.
The film, starring Dev Patel as Kid, an enigmatic figure seeking vengeance against corrupt leaders responsible for his mother’s death, has the potential to benefit from positive word-of-mouth in the coming weeks, said Variety.
