RICHMOND, VA — Virginia State Senator Ghazala Hashmi’s campaign for lieutenant governor just received a major shot in the arm: a record-breaking $1 million investment from the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association (DLGA), marking the single largest financial commitment ever made to a lieutenant governor’s race in the Commonwealth.
The announcement, made June 30, underscores the national stakes of the 2025 Virginia election and signals that Democrats see Hashmi’s candidacy as central to preserving their foothold in a key battleground state.
“This historic $1 million investment in Ghazala Hashmi’s campaign is the largest ever made to a lieutenant governor candidate in Virginia,” said DLGA Chair and Pennsylvania Lt. Governor Austin Davis. “She has been a tireless advocate for Medicaid expansion, reproductive rights, and public schools—and now, more than ever, we need that kind of leadership.”
The DLGA’s $1 million commitment is also twice the amount reportedly being spent in Virginia by the Republican Governors Association, highlighting the high-profile nature of the race and the contrast between Hashmi and her GOP opponent, conservative commentator John Reid.
Hashmi, who made history in 2019 as the first Muslim woman elected to Virginia’s State Senate, secured the Democratic nomination after a competitive primary. Her campaign is expected to focus on health care, education, and reproductive freedom—issues that have come into sharper focus amid growing concerns about Donald Trump’s influence on national and state politics.
Reid, backed by the Republican establishment, supports a 16-week abortion ban, cuts to the federal workforce, school voucher expansion, and loosening gun regulations—all positions Hashmi’s campaign has vowed to challenge.
Hashmi’s supporters say the DLGA’s financial backing is a signal of growing confidence in her ability to energize voters and flip the lieutenant governor’s office blue in what’s expected to be one of the most closely watched statewide races of the year.
