NEW  YORK, NY —A special gathering was held on September 21celebrating both civic engagement and cultural heritage and organized by Dr. Sheetal Desai and entrepreneur Hiren Chauhan.

The evening began with the lighting of the diya, a Hindu ritual symbolizing wisdom, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness, a press release said.  

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for NYC mayor joined community leaders in the ceremony, reflecting his commitment to cultural traditions and respect for diversity.

The event also featured an interactive dialogue where Indian American leaders posed questions to Mamdani about his vision for New York City, emphasizing the growing role of the community in shaping public policy and civic discourse.

Attendees described the evening as both a celebration of cultural heritage and a recognition of the expanding political influence of Indian Americans. Said one participant. “It shows that our voices and perspectives are increasingly shaping the future of the city.”
