WASHINGTON, D.C.-The Embassy of India here, has issued a public advisory regarding a scam in which fraudsters are impersonating embassy officials over the phone to extort money and personal information.
The scam artists are using a technique known as “spoofing” to make their calls appear as if they are coming directly from the embassy’s telephone lines. According to the advisory, these individuals are making fraudulent claims, such as errors in consular forms or pending complaints with Indian police or Interpol. They then attempt to obtain personal details or demand money from the victims.
In its statement, the embassy clarified that its officials do not make phone calls to solicit personal information from either Indian or foreign nationals. It urges anyone who receives such a call to report it immediately. The advisory directs potential victims to file a complaint on the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) portal at https://www.ic3.gov/.
