NEWARK, NJ – An Indian student was handcuffed and pinned to the ground at Newark Airport before being deported, an incident captured in a viral video shared by an Indian American social entrepreneur Kunal Jain on X.

The student was observed crying and allegedly “treated like a criminal” by authorities.

Jain, President of HealthBots AI, who was at the airport, shared a video of the distressed student and described the scene. He noted the student was speaking in Haryanvi, saying, “I’m not insane, these people are trying to make me look insane.” Jain expressed his heartbreak, stating, “I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy.”

According to Jain, the student had a valid visa but was “unable to explain the reason for their visit to the immigration authorities.” He added that similar incidents are occurring frequently, with “3-4 such cases” daily where students are “sent back on the evening flight tied up like criminals.” Jain also called for public assistance, stating, “This poor kid’s parent won’t know what’s happening to him.”

India’s Consulate General in New York has taken cognizance of the social media posts and confirmed it is in touch with local authorities regarding the matter.

15,564 Indian nationals have been deported from the U.S. between 2009 and 2024, most of it was done quietly but is now being done with force.

    • How did Premba come to the conclusion that this stuidernt was a criminal and als not an angel? Even if he was/is not an angel, why slam him to the cement floor? Was he fighting the immigration officials? Too many unknowns but that did not matter to Premba.

    • Crimals are everywhere but only when confirmed, verified. An assumption by Pemba is irresponsible and immature to say the least.

    • You seems to add salt over injury. We don’t have a dictatorial govin this country yet. That is why we have courts. Once a person has been granted a visa, he or she must be allowed in the country. Don’t punish the visa holder, punish the counselor who granted the visa.
