WASHINGTON, DC — Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA) is leading a renewed push in Congress to challenge corporate consolidation and fight for the economic rights of working Americans.

Jayapal and fellow lawmakers officially launched the Monopoly Busters Caucus, a coalition aimed at confronting monopolistic power and building a pro-worker, pro-consumer, and pro-small business economy.

The caucus, which includes nine founding members and spans the ideological spectrum of the Democratic Party, signals a growing bipartisan awareness that unchecked corporate power is hurting Americans’ wallets.

“Something is wrong in this country when families go to the grocery store and can’t afford milk or eggs or cereal,” Jayapal said, launching the initiative with a blistering critique of today’s economic landscape. “As people struggle under the weight of inflation, corporate profits are higher than ever.”

Jayapal traced the rising cost of living—from rent to health care—to one root cause: monopolies.

“Life in America has become unaffordable,” she said. “The answer to why is simple: corporate monopolies. When we take on corporate power, we can make a meaningful difference in the everyday lives of working people across the country – and we must, the American people are counting on us.”

Jayapal’s remarks come amid growing public frustration and data from recent years showing that many industries—like meatpacking, baby food, and soda—are dominated by just four companies, giving them outsized control over pricing and production.

Representative Chris Deluzio (PA), who joined Jayapal as a co-chair of the caucus, echoed the urgency: “Monopolies have been rigging the system, crushing competition and small businesses, and ripping off the American people for decades. And for too long, politicians in Congress have let it happen.”

Representative Pat Ryan (NY) pointed directly at the industries behind the price hikes: “The reason for this is clear – in every one of those industries, we’ve let monopolies drive up costs and drive down quality, all while making record breaking profits. We’re gonna fight back against these big and powerful corporations, hold the bad actors accountable, and ultimately put power back where it belongs: with the American people.”

Representative Angie Craig (MN) brought in a warning about international economic strategy: “At a time when the Administration is launching our country headfirst into a global trade war, it’s more important than ever that we uplift small and local businesses right here at home.”

Jayapal and her colleagues are pushing for stricter enforcement of antitrust laws, citing decades of lax oversight that allowed a few powerful players to dominate markets. According to the caucus, rigorous antitrust action is not just economic policy—it’s a path to restoring fairness for American families and entrepreneurs.

  • You guys can form any number of caucus under various names and shrill at the top of your voice for the next four years, but nothing is going happen, until you have the majority in at least in one house. What will happen, is that you will be just spending your time in protesting, protesting ad infinitum. That’s a damn easy job, you don’t get to accomplish anything tangible except to hurt any chance the democrats– the middle of the roaders — have in the next few elections.

  • Wake up Jaypal. Your divisive propagandas alienated millions of voters and destroyed Biden Presidency . First apologize for the misdeeds, including culture war, open border, support for criminals and terrorists. You and your cronies took advantage of Biden’s impaired cognition and ran a proxy government. You continued your agendas while ignoring our needs. Now, people are paying the price. Of course, you are gifted with creating new propagandas. However, it is not going anywhere unless you and your cronies make a 360 degree turn around with a goal to serve the people, not special interests. Anyone can be on social media- but it only goes little for empty vessels like you.

  • Ms. Jaypal is a Socialist lawmaker, read as a Leftist. I wonder if she would think about a better life for Americans which socialism cannot grant.
