NEW YORK, NY – On August 12, Democratic Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar officially announced her candidacy for New York City’s comptroller. In a video campaign clip, Rajkumar declared, “I’m in it for the New Yorkers who toil 25 hours a day, eight days a week, and can’t afford life-saving health care or quality education. Government inefficiency costs lives.”

Earlier she had told the New York Post, while outlining her vision for the role, “Traditionally, the comptroller is a man in an office crunching numbers, but I will make it so much more.”

For months, she has hinted at her bid for the comptroller position, leading to speculation among political insiders about her plans for the office.

A close ally of Mayor Adams, Rajkumar stated that she speaks to the mayor at least twice daily, a connection that could provide her with a significant advantage in the campaign, the Post said.

Rajkumar made history as the first South Asian-American woman ever to be elected to a state office in New York. A graduate of Stanford Law School, she passed a landmark bill establishing New York State’s first-ever Asian American & Pacific Island Commission. She has also been in the forefront with New York declaring Diwali to be a school holiday
