NEW DELHI– A stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on the night of February 15 left at least 18 people dead, including five children, and several others injured as overcrowding surged amid Maha Kumbh festival travel. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
The tragedy occurred in the night when a passenger reportedly lost balance on the stairs, triggering panic as thousands of devotees attempted to board trains to Prayagraj for the religious gathering. The youngest victim was seven years old, while the oldest was 79. Most of the deceased were women, according to police records.
Officials said a two-member committee has been formed to conduct a high-level inquiry.
