NEW DELHI (ANI) – The high-stakes Assembly elections concluded with Maharashtra recording a voter turnout of 62.05%, while Jharkhand saw a higher turnout of 68.01%, surpassing the 67.04% turnout in the 2019 Assembly elections, the Election Commission (EC) reported on November 20.

Simultaneous polling for all 288 seats in Maharashtra and 38 seats in Jharkhand (Phase 2) was completed peacefully, according to the EC. Despite a range of initiatives to facilitate voting, urban voter participation remained low in cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Thane.

Ahead of the elections, the EC organized various awareness and mobilization campaigns, including collaborations with film celebrities and national icons, to encourage urban and young voters. Long queues at polling stations were seen, with a diverse group of voters, including first-time voters, the elderly, tribal communities, women with children, persons with disabilities, third-gender voters, and families.

Polling stations were equipped with essential facilities like toilets, ramps, shade, and drinking water to ensure voter comfort.

In Mumbai, celebrities played an active role in motivating citizens to vote. A total of 4,136 candidates are vying for the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra, which has an electorate of over 9.7 crore.

In Jharkhand, a strong turnout was seen across the 38 Assembly Constituencies (ACs) in 12 districts. The first phase of Jharkhand’s elections, covering 43 of the 81 seats, took place on November 13. The results for all 81 constituencies in Jharkhand, as well as the Maharashtra Assembly elections and bypolls in various states, will be declared on November 23.
