QUEENS, NY – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined thousands in Queens to mark Phagwah, the Indo Caribbean celebration of Holi, as a colorful parade filled the streets of Richmond Hill with music, dancing, and traditional festivities.
Mamdani took part in the 38th annual Phagwah Parade on March 29, walking alongside members of the city’s Hindu community and other participants celebrating the festival.

In a message he posted after the event, Mamdani said he was delighted to return to Richmond Hill to celebrate with Indo Guyanese and Indo Caribbean residents, whose traditions continue to shape New York City’s cultural identity.
Phagwah, the Indo Caribbean name for Holi, is rooted in Hinduism and draws large crowds to Liberty Avenue each year and remains an important cultural and spiritual observance for the Indo Guyanese community. It has also grown into a broader national festival embraced by people of diverse backgrounds, in Guyana and its diaspora.
