CHICAGO, IL — In a ceremony held July 3 at the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) office in Oak Brook, Dr. Amit Chakrabarty and Dr. Hetal Gor were formally sworn in as President and Chair of the Board of Trustees. The oath was administered by Dr. Suresh Reddy, past AAPI President and Oak Brook Township Trustee.
The leadership transition follows AAPI bylaws, according to outgoing President Dr. Satheesh Kathula. While the ceremonial gavel transfer is scheduled for July 26 at the AAPI Convention Gala, the formal handover took place earlier this month.
Dr. Chakrabarty said he aims to unify AAPI by moving beyond regional divides. “Indian American physicians represent tremendous talent and potential. The key to realizing that lies in collective action and a united voice,” he said.
Dr. Gor, a board-certified OB-GYN, now serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees. She is the founder of the Bergen Indian Medical Association and the U.S. chapter of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India. She has also led Indian American women physician and entrepreneur groups and is on the board of the Bergen Performing Arts Center in New Jersey.
Also sworn in was Dr. Meher Medavaram, a family medicine physician and Medical Director at Mount Sinai Hospital’s FAQH Center, who will serve as President-Elect. She also holds academic appointments at the University of Illinois and CMU School of Medicine.
AAPI, founded in 1982, represents over 125,000 Indian-origin physicians in the U.S. Members are involved in clinical care, research, and healthcare leadership, and serve one in seven patients nationwide.
