WASHINGTON, D.C.- Republican Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) has introduced new legislation aimed at discouraging companies from outsourcing jobs and hiring foreign workers. The proposed bill, called the Halting International Relocation of Employment (HIRE) Act, would impose a 25% tax on outsourcing payments made to foreign workers. The revenue generated would be used to fund workforce development and apprenticeship programs for the American middle class.

In a statement, Senator Moreno said the bill would “hit them where it hurts: their pocketbooks” if companies choose to hire foreign workers over Americans. He emphasized the need to “fight for working-class Americans” and ensure they can “work and retire with dignity” at a time when college graduates struggle to find jobs.

The legislation follows recent criticism of US immigration and hiring policies. Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis had previously called the H-1B visa program a “total scam,” telling Fox News in an August 27 interview that the program allows companies to train and then lay off American workers in favor of foreign labor. He described the practice as “unacceptable” and harmful to American workers.

Senator Moreno’s proposal also comes after his own efforts to implement stricter penalties on executives who hire illegal immigrants. The HIRE Act aims to protect American workers by disincentivizing companies from seeking cheaper wages and outsourcing jobs. (ANI)
