NEW DELHI- In a written response to the Lok Sabha, the government announced that over 200,000 Indians gave up their citizenship in 2024. The data, provided by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, revealed a significant increase in this trend over the past five years.

The official data shows a steady rise in the number of renunciations: 85,256 in 2020, 163,370 in 2021, 225,620 in 2022, 216,219 in 2023, and 206,378 in 2024. For context, the numbers were substantially lower a decade ago, with 122,819 in 2011 and 129,328 in 2014.

The government maintained that the reasons for giving up citizenship are personal and known only to the individuals involved.

According to available data, the total population of overseas Indians is 34,356,193, consisting of 17,181,071 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and 17,175,122 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
