Perplexity Teases AI-Powered Browser ‘Comet’ As User Growth Soars

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Perplexity is preparing to launch its own browser, Comet, promising a bold rethinking of how people use the internet. Described as more than just a browsing tool, Comet is being pitched as a “cognitive operating system” designed to let AI actively assist users—not just answer questions, but complete tasks.
“It’ll be there for you every time, anytime, for work or life,” said CEO Aravind Srinivas at Bloomberg’s Tech Summit on June 5. “A system on the side, or just going and doing browsing sessions for you. We used to browse the internet; now, we live on it.”

The reveal comes as Perplexity hits a new usage milestone: 780 million queries in May, a 20% jump from April. That’s up from just 3,000 queries on its first day in 2022 to 30 million daily today. “Give it a year, we’ll be doing, like, a billion queries a week if we can sustain this growth rate,” Srinivas said.
To capitalize on that momentum, the company is betting big on Comet, which aims to embed AI directly into the browsing experience—via search, new tab pages, and sidecar assistants. This deep integration could boost both user engagement and retention, TechCrunch reported.
Comet would also expand Perplexity’s visibility into user behavior beyond its current app, a move that could support a premium ad model along the lines of Google’s, the report said.
