Rep. Suhas Pushes ‘Babies Over Billionaires’ Bill To Repeal Tariffs On Car Seats, Strollers

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) has joined a group of Democratic lawmakers in a new push to lower costs for working families by ending tariffs on baby essentials like car seats, strollers, and diapers.
The initiative, unveiled on July 23 by the Congressional Dads Caucus, includes six separate bills under a shared “Babies Over Billionaires” agenda. Each targets a different category of baby-related products hit by Trump-era tariffs, which lawmakers say have driven up prices on items families rely on daily.
Subramanyam, the father of two young children, is leading efforts to remove tariffs on safety-related goods such as car seats and strollers.
“I know how expensive it is to raise children and make sure that they have all the resources they need to grow up to live healthy lives,” Subramanyam said. “Working families in the Commonwealth, and across the country, are facing the brunt of Trump’s tariff taxes, which are raising prices on essential goods by 30% or more.”
The Dads Caucus argues that the tariffs function as a hidden tax on parents, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income households. According to their estimates, the average American family now pays $4,600 more annually due to elevated import costs tied to the trade policies enacted during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Other members of the Caucus are introducing related bills targeting tariffs on baby formula, bottles, clothing, toys, and hygiene products.
Subramanyam urged Republican colleagues to join the effort, saying, “This should not be a partisan issue. We have a chance to offer real relief to working parents. Babies shouldn’t pay the price for bad trade policy.”
