FOLSOM, CA – A group of Indian Americans organized a protest in Greater Sacramento on August 25, demanding urgent action to address gender-based violence following the rape and murder of a female medic in Kolkata.

On August 9, a 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered while on duty at a hospital in Kolkata. Her body was discovered in a seminar hall on the hospital premises. A civic volunteer was arrested the following day in connection with the attack, which has sparked widespread agitation among doctors globally.

Protesters in Greater Sacramento criticized the West Bengal State Government for failing to ensure the safety of women doctors in the hospital. One protester described the incident as indicative of rising violence against women in the state.

Debashis Maity, one of the protest organizers, stated that the group will continue to advocate for swift justice and improved safety and security for medical professionals. Another organizer, Oindrila Chakrabortty, called for immediate measures to ensure the safety of medical staff.

City of Folsom Councilmember YK Chalamcharla attended the protest and paid tribute to the victim.
