Sam Altman Unveils Plans To Establish OpenAI Office In New Delhi

NEW DELHI — OpenAI is making its first big push into India, announcing plans to set up a corporate office in New Delhi and build a local team to better serve one of the world’s largest technology markets. The move comes just days after the company launched a ChatGPT plan designed specifically for Indian users.
With more than 800 million internet users and a booming smartphone market, India represents a crucial frontier for global AI companies. “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a statement.
Altman emphasized India’s strengths as a potential AI powerhouse. “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader — amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission,” he said.
But alongside the promise, OpenAI faces hurdles. Monetization remains a challenge in India’s price-sensitive market, where even tech giants like Google and Meta have struggled to turn scale into profits. Integration with local businesses is another test: the news agency Asian News International (ANI) has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging the company used its copyrighted news content without permission.
The New Delhi office marks OpenAI’s latest expansion in Asia, following launches in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.
