THORNTON, CO — West Indian cricket legend and ICC Hall of Famer Shivnarine Chanderpaul officially opened a new cricket pitch and ground at the Thornton Sports Complex on October 4.
The facility is the first in Thornton to feature permanent lighting, enabling evening matches and training sessions. It is dedicated to supporting youth and school cricket programs, including those within the Adams 12 Five Star Schools district.
The project was led by the Colorado Tennis Cricket League (CTCL), which has grown into a hub for diverse cultures and cricket talent. CTCL President Geo George Vadakkan acknowledged key contributors to the project, including Manoj Gangwar, Anil Vijay, and Vinod Murthy.
Thornton Mayor Jan Kulmann highlighted the field’s role in bringing the community together through sport. The inauguration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and recognition of local student-athletes.
Multi-sports coach and Cricket Hall of Famer Jatin Patel, noted for mentoring the league’s coaching staff since 2017, also attended. Aaralyn Ann Vadakkan, a senior at Cherry Creek High School, received an autographed cap from Chanderpaul during the event.
