SAN JOSE, CA – The Association of Indo-Americans and Bolly 92.3 hosted “Swades” a spectacular event commemorating India’s 78th Independence Day.

For the first time, AIA organized the India Parade in Downtown San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley, with organizers estimating that it drew over 10,000 viewers. The parade, supported by more than 45 Indian organizations in the Bay Area, featured participants walking with a 100+ ft Indian flag, creating a vibrant and patriotic display.

The flag-hoisting ceremony was a key moment, attended by dignitaries including Consul General of India, Dr. K. Srikar Reddy, who led the parade and hoisted the Indian tricolor flag. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan also took part, hoisting the US flag. Over 50 elected officials from Congressman, Senators, Mayors to City Council members across Silicon Valley conveyed their wishes, organizers said.

Floats showcasing the diverse culture and heritage of various Indian states added to the parade’s appeal. Enthusiastic participants played music and danced, filling the streets with patriotic energy.

Cultural programs were a highlight, with over 300 children participating in classical and film dances. The AIA Rockstar singing contest was a standout success. Additional events included carrom, chess, and essay competitions, with winners awarded scholarships for college.

AIA recognized outstanding contributions with the “Exemplary Women Leader” award to Mrs. Jhansi Reddy and the “Lifetime Achievement Award” to renowned musician and national award winner, Sri Mahesh Kale.

The celebrations continued until 11:00 PM, featuring Vijaya Bharat – a grand musical entertainment event with state and classical dances, a fire show, live singing, and DJ music, capping off a night of outstanding festivities.
