FAIRFAX, VA -Indian American entrepreneur Sanjay Govil has emerged as a leading contender to acquire a stake in the Hobart Hurricanes as privatization talks continue around Australia’s Big Bash League.

According to Code Sports, Govil’s association with former Australian captain Ricky Ponting influenced the move. Ponting is linked with the Hurricanes and also serves as coach of Washington Freedom, the Major League Cricket franchise owned by Govil.

“Because of our close association with Ricky Ponting, who’s our coach and a close friend for the Washington Freedom – he’s obviously in Hobart – we are definitely interested,” Govil told Code Sports.

Govil, who grew up in Delhi before moving to the United States, began his career at IBM and Verizon. He later founded Infinite Computer Solutions in 1999 and went on to launch digital health platform Zyter|TruCare.

Beyond technology, Govil has expanded into cricket investments. He is a founding investor in Major League Cricket.

In 2025, Govil acquired a 49 percent stake in Welsh Fire in England’s The Hundred competition, according to the BBC.

Govil was also previously linked with a possible bid for Royal Challengers Bengaluru after reports suggested the IPL franchise could be put up for sale.
