With Brewing Board Tensions, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran Quits

MUMBAI -N Chandrasekaran will not seek reappointment as chairman of Tata Sons when his current term ends in February 2027, bringing an end to his decade-long tenure at the top of the Tata Group’s holding company.
Chandrasekaran’s decision comes ahead of the Tata Sons annual general meeting on August 18. He has asked the board to decide on his successor soon so that the transition can be completed properly.
The decision follows months of uncertainty over the extension of his term. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had recommended extending Chandrasekaran’s term by five years. The proposal was placed before the Tata Sons Board on February 24, 2026, but one board member did not support it. Chandrasekaran said that without unanimous support, he chose to defer the decision.
The development comes amid differences between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts over board representation, group strategy and the proposed exit of minority shareholder Shapoorji Pallonji. Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata has opposed Chandrasekaran’s reappointment. Media reports have also said Noel Tata wants his son, Neville Tata, to take on a bigger role in the company.
Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987 and became chief executive officer of Tata Consultancy Services in 2009. He took over as Tata Sons chairman in 2017. During his tenure, the group faced major challenges including the Air India crash, pricing pressure at TCS and a cyberattack at Jaguar Land Rover.
Chandrasekaran, in his statement, said he had completed 40 years of professional life with the Tata Group and described his decade leading Tata Sons as an honor and a major responsibility.
