India: Racial Bias Claims By UN Committee Are Politically Motivated

NEW YORK, NY – India has rejected concerns raised by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) over large scale violations by law enforcement officials against ethnic and ethno religious groups, Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes, particularly Dalits, as well as non-citizens.

The committee raised the concerns following its review of India’s implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), held in Geneva on August 11 and 12.

India on August 26 described the committee’s references as “politically motivated” and “highly malicious.”  (IANS)
