Mamdani Nominates Meenakshi Srinivasan To NYC Planning Commission

NEW YORK, NY – New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani has nominated veteran urban planner and administrative leader Meenakshi Srinivasan to the New York City Planning Commission, alongside four other housing, land use, and economic development experts.

Srinivasan, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, brings nearly three decades of municipal government experience to the independent 13-member panel, which handles land-use applications, public hearings, zoning, and capital investments across the five boroughs.

Her career in city service includes leading two major municipal bodies. She served as chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, where she managed preservation efforts and implemented administrative and transparency reforms. Prior to that, Srinivasan chaired the Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA), overseeing zoning variance requests, administrative appeals, and special permits while updating agency standards and introducing digital public access tools.

She previously held the role of Deputy Director of the Department of City Planning’s Manhattan Office. Most recently, she has worked in private practice as a senior adviser at two law firms, counseling on commercial, residential, institutional, and mixed-use land-use projects.

The other nominees include re-appointed CPC Vice Chair Kenneth Knuckles and New York Law School Dean Anthony Crowell, alongside new inductees Margaret Anadu, CEO of One Weaver, and Julie Stein, Executive Director of the Union Square Partnership.

All five nominations await New York City Council confirmation and have drawn support from major civic organizations, including Open New York and the Regional Plan Association.
