US Returns 297 Stolen Indian Antiquities
WASHINGTON, DC (ANI) – Amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States, the U.S. government returned 297 antiquities that had been smuggled out of India. An official statement released on September 22 confirmed the handover, emphasizing the cultural significance of these artifacts.
In a post on X, Modi expressed his gratitude to President Joe Biden and the U.S. government, highlighting the importance of the returned items. “Deepening cultural connect and strengthening the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural properties. I am extremely grateful to President Biden and the U.S. Government for ensuring the return of 297 invaluable antiquities to India,” he said.
The artifacts, ranging from sculptures to vases, belong to a period spanning from 2000 BCE to 1900 CE. Some are made of stone, metal, wood and ivory.
Modi reiterated that these antiquities are not merely historical artifacts but represent the core of India’s civilization and cultural heritage.
