NEW DELHI – The Parliamentary Committee on Communications and Information Technology, led by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, has announced plans to summon Meta officials after company owner Mark Zuckerberg’s comments about elections in India.

Dubey called Zuckerberg’s statement “alarming” and accused the Meta CEO of interfering with India’s democracy.

Zuckerberg, in a podcast with Joe Rogan, claimed that the post-COVID atmosphere caused a breakdown of trust in governments globally, including India, where he stated the incumbent lost every election in 2024. In response, Dubey asserted, “India is a vibrant democracy with a government elected by over 140 million people. This statement is misleading and false, and it reflects an attempt to undermine the democratic process.”

He further emphasized that Zuckerberg’s remarks were particularly concerning in light of growing global discussions about the influence of social media on political processes.

Dubey announced that Meta would be required to apologize or face potential legal action.
