Kash Patel Meddling In CA Governor Race? FBI Probes Trump Critic Eric Swalwell

WASHINGTON, DC – The FBI is intensifying its focus on Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA), a strident critic of President Donald Trump, with Director Kash Patel reportedly spearheading a discreet initiative to unearth and release decade-old investigative documents. According to reporting from The Washington Post, Patel has directed agents in the San Francisco field office to fast-track the retrieval and redaction of files concerning Swalwell’s past connection to Christine Fang, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative.

This renewed scrutiny is allegedly part of a broader strategy to build a criminal case against the congressman, who currently leads the field in polls for the state’s race for governor. Swalwell posted, “There’s only one candidate that Donald Trump fears will be the next governor of California.” In Trump’s first term, Swalwell had led efforts to have the president impeached.

Internal discussions within the bureau have reportedly included unconventional tactics, such as potentially deploying agents to China to locate Fang or offering her a U.S. visa in exchange for compromising information on Swalwell. These efforts come despite the fact that a previous two-year investigation by the House Ethics Committee concluded in 2023 and did not call for any action against Swalwell.

Patel’s insistence on making these files public has sparked friction within the FBI, as some officials express concern that the move could jeopardize sensitive law enforcement methods and source confidentiality, Washington Post said.

The pressure from Patel has drawn sharp condemnation from high-profile Democrats, including California Senator Adam Schiff, who characterized the maneuver as a dangerous and unlawful abuse of the FBI’s authority. Schiff argued that the administration and its appointees are once again weaponizing the Department of Justice to target political adversaries and influence the outcome of the California election. He maintained that such efforts to intimidate voters would fail, asserting that Californians would not be moved by the “desperate actions” of what he described as a “wannabe despot.”

While the bureau reportedly continues to search for a viable criminal angle, Swalwell remains a vocal critic of the administration, calling the investigation as a politically motivated attempt to derail his campaign and framing Patel’s focus as an effort to score political points rather than protect national security.
