WASHINGTON, DC -The Department of Labor has finalized its leadership transition by naming Mangala Kuppa as its permanent Chief Information Officer. Kuppa, who has served as the acting CIO since October, will concurrently maintain her role as the agency’s Chief AI Officer. The appointment, confirmed by a DOL spokesperson this week, provides permanent oversight to the agency’s IT division following the departure of former director Thomas Shedd last year.
Kuppa’s elevation follows a six-year tenure within the department, where she previously held leadership roles in case management and business application services before serving as Chief Technology Officer. Her background also includes more than a decade of service at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Reflecting on the promotion on her personal LinkedIn page, Kuppa stated she was “grateful for the opportunity to keep serving and making a difference.”
During her time with the DOL, Kuppa has been credited with the development of the agency’s enterprise data platform and the integration of low-code solutions to modernize internal workflows. Most recently, she spearheaded the launch of the department’s open data portal, a joint initiative involving the Office of the Chief Data and Analytics Officer.
As the agency’s primary authority on artificial intelligence, Kuppa has overseen a period of rapid policy development. Kuppa has maintained that the primary challenge of the current technological shift is organizational rather than purely technical.
