MUMBAI –Actress Alia Bhatt responded with humor after facing online criticism over her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, prompting support from several Indian entertainment figures who defended her against social media trolling.

The discussion began after videos of Bhatt walking the Cannes red carpet circulated online, with some social media users running clips where she did not receive attention from international photographers.

Responding to one Instagram user who commented, “What a pity, no one noticed you,” on her May 13 post, Alia replied, “Why pity love? You noticed me :)”

Her response was widely shared online, with several users praising the actress for the way she handled the criticism.

Singer Rahul Vaidya criticized online trolling and what he described as attempts to target successful women for clicks. “Funny how people sitting with zero achievements become fashion critics, Cannes analysts, and global PR experts overnight,” Rahul wrote on social media.

Actor Aly Goni also defended Alia and criticized people for mocking Indian artists representing the country internationally. “It’s sad when our own people try to pull down someone who has worked so hard to put India on the global stage,” Aly wrote on social media.

Amid the discussion surrounding her Cannes appearance, Alia also spoke about one of her favorite fashion moments from the festival during a recent interview with British Vogue.

Recalling Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s appearance at the premiere of Devdas, Alia said, “A Cannes look that actually goes down in my memory as absolutely iconic would have to be Aishwarya Rai Bachchan at the ‘Devdas’ premiere.”

“The beautiful sari that she wore and just her face, it was so iconic,” she added.

Alia also shared images and videos from Cannes, including her custom ivory silk saree-gown look, which many fans compared to her character Rani from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. (With IANS inputs)
