The Untold Story Behind The Bollywood Classic ‘Tadap Tadap’
MUMBAI – One of the most iconic heartbreak songs in Hindi cinema, ‘Tadap Tadap Ke’ from filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, was originally not composed for the blockbuster film, music composer Ismail Darbar revealed.
Darbar said the song was initially being recorded as a scratch track for another major film before eventually finding its place in Bhansali’s 1999 hit starring Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai.
“I am talking about a time before I got ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. I was recording the scratch version for another big film,” Darbar said.
Recalling how the song later reached Bhansali, Darbar said the filmmaker immediately recognized its significance to the film.
“When I finally played him this song, he told me, ‘Today, Ismail, I know where my film should have its interval and where it should end. Today, I feel my film is complete.’”
Darbar also revisited his first meeting with late playback singer KK, whose rendition of ‘Tadap Tadap Ke’ went on to become one of the most memorable songs in Hindi cinema.
He recalled meeting KK for the first time while working on the track and playing the scratch version for him.
According to Darbar, KK’s first reaction was that the song did not fit his singing style.
“The first thing he told me was, ‘Ismail bhai, first of all, this is not my kind of song, so I don’t think I can sing it.’”
Darbar said he remained convinced that KK’s voice was ideal for the composition and persuaded the singer to trust his vision for the song. According to the composer, KK eventually agreed to record the track despite his initial hesitation.
Sharing a memory from the recording session, Darbar said the song’s emotional impact was immediate.
“When he finally learnt the song and recorded it, believe me, the very first person who cried after hearing it was KK’s wife.”(IANS)
