Aasif Sheikh Showcases Versatility In 350+ Characters

MUMBAI – Bollywood and television actor Aasif Sheikh has long been celebrated as one of the most versatile faces on Indian television. Best known for his role as ‘Vibhuti Narayan Mishra’ in &TV’s popular sitcom ‘Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai’, he has carved a niche for himself with his adaptability and charm.

Over the years, Sheikh has played more than 350 characters on screen, including over 35 female roles spanning ages from 21 to 80. While such portrayals may intimidate many actors, Sheikh has always viewed them as part of his craft.

“When ‘Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai’ began, a lot of research and development went into my roles. Slowly, the team started designing new characters and appearances for me, and the audience responded with love,” he recalled. “I am grateful to my directors and writers who trusted me with these opportunities.”

On his approach to character building, Sheikh explained, “My first step is always to explore variations and think about the impact a role can create. With my team, we research, take references, and create a sketch before moving to costumes and makeup. Once the look is ready, we define the language, attitude, and body language. Finally, I step into the situation and perform. For me, a character is simply a character. Gender doesn’t matter—authenticity does.”

Playing female roles, however, brings its own challenges. “I won’t deny it takes more effort. From costumes to makeup, the transformation can take hours. I remember one track where it took nearly two and a half hours to get ready each day. These get-ups demand patience, especially during long shoots. But I enjoy the process,” he said.

Though television made him a household name, Sheikh’s career spans more than three decades in Bollywood, with notable appearances in films such as ‘Pyaar Koi Khel Nahi’, ‘Haseena Maan Jayegi’, and ‘Kunwara’. (IANS)
