LONDON – Amazon MGM Studios is taking the creative reins of the James Bond franchise as longtime producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli step back, marking a major shift in the series’ future.
As part of a new joint venture, Wilson, Broccoli, and Amazon MGM will remain co-owners of the 007 intellectual property, but Amazon MGM will now oversee creative decisions.
“For over 60 years, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history,” said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. “We are honored to continue this legacy and usher in the next chapter of 007.”
Wilson, a key figure in Bond productions for nearly six decades, said he is shifting focus to art and charitable work. “With this transition, Barbara and I agree that it’s time for Amazon MGM Studios to lead James Bond into the future,” he said.
Broccoli, reflecting on her decades of work on the franchise, called No Time to Die—the 25th Bond film and Daniel Craig’s final outing—a natural turning point. “My life has been dedicated to preserving and expanding the extraordinary legacy my father, Cubby Broccoli, built,” she said. “Now, with Michael retiring, I feel it’s the right time to focus on other projects.”
Amazon acquired MGM in 2022 for $8.5 billion, gaining control of a vast film and television catalog, including distribution rights to all Bond films.
