Amid Threats, Police Asks Canada Temple Body To Postpone Event

BRAMPTON (ANI) – Hours after the Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Centre requested local police intervention due to threats, Peel Regional Police suggested that the temple authorities consider “rescheduling” an upcoming event, citing safety concerns. The Consular Camp event was set to take place on November 17.

Nishan Duraiappah, Chief of Police for Brampton and Mississauga, stated that a temporary postponement could help “de-escalate the present tensions” and protect the safety of attendees. “We believe that a temporary postponement could contribute meaningfully to de-escalating the present tensions and safeguarding the wellbeing of those attending your location,” read the letter from the police.

The Brampton Triveni Mandir and Community Centre had earlier announced the cancellation of the event due to fears of “extremely high levels of violent protests.” In their statement, they expressed regret, apologizing to the community members who had been looking forward to the event. “We are deeply saddened that Canadians now feel unsafe coming to Hindu temples in Canada,” the statement read.

The concerns follow a violent disruption at an Indian consular camp held on November 3 at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, which sparked widespread criticism.
