WASHINGTON, D.C. – Aparna Raj will advance to the November election after winning the Democratic primary for the Ward 1 council seat in Washington, D.C.
Raj defeated four other candidates in the race for the seat, which became available after Councilmember Brianne Nadeau announced that she would not seek re-election for a fourth term.
The victory puts her in a strong position heading into November in heavily Democratic Washington, D.C.
Following the result, Raj thanked supporters in a social media post.
“It’s an honor to officially be your Democratic nominee for the Ward 1 DC Council seat,” she wrote, adding, “This victory belongs to all of us. Let’s keep building a Ward 1 where every resident can thrive.”
According to her campaign website, Raj’s priorities include stable housing, good public schools, union jobs and strong public transit.
A District resident for the past 10 years, Raj previously served as chair of Metro DC Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). She said her work with the organization included advocating for tenants’ rights, supporting workers and opposing the Trump administration.
The campaign drew support from labor unions and progressive organizations across the city. Raj has credited that backing to grassroots organizing and engagement among working-class residents.
“You can’t manufacture that kind of grassroots energy and on-the-ground support; people need to believe in your platform and message, and I’m so proud that that’s the movement we’re building,” Raj said.
The race marked the first Ward 1 Democratic primary in decades without an incumbent candidate on the ballot.
Federal actions in Washington also featured prominently during the campaign. President Donald Trump has focused significant attention on the District during his second term, including a federal enforcement surge and a year-long National Guard presence.
Addressing those developments on her campaign website, Raj said, “In the face of Trump’s attempts to intimidate us and scare us into silence, we need to come together and fight for all of our communities.”
Ward 1 includes Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan, Lanier Heights and Howard University.
