China is deepening its space partnerships in Africa, supporting satellite development while securing access to critical surveillance data. This move aligns with Beijing’s broader ambition to dominate the global space sector, Reuters reports.

Egypt’s state-of-the-art satellite facility was intended to showcase African space capabilities. However, much of its equipment and technical expertise come from China. A key satellite from the center was largely manufactured and launched in China, Reuters reports. Located in “Space City” near Cairo, the facility highlights Egypt’s growing space ties with Beijing under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Egypt is one of 23 African nations that have signed space agreements with China. Beijing has also constructed ground stations in Ethiopia and Namibia, which analysts suggest could have military and intelligence applications.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged $50 billion in loans and investments for Africa’s space and technology sectors, Reuters reports. Several African nations, including South Africa and Senegal, are exploring cooperation with China on a future moon base, positioning themselves in Beijing’s long-term space strategy.

U.S. Retreats

While China expands its influence, the U.S. has reduced foreign aid, including space-related support for developing nations, Reuters reports. NASA’s presence in Africa remains minimal, focusing on small-scale projects. Meanwhile, China’s approach—offering funding, infrastructure, and training—is gaining traction.

With Beijing aiming for global space leadership by 2045, its growing influence in Africa underscores a shifting balance in the geopolitical space race, challenging U.S. dominance.
