NEW DELHI – Bim Bissell, a key figure in promoting Indian handicrafts and handlooms and a driving force behind FabIndia, passed away on January 9, 2025, at the age of 93 due to age-related complications. She is survived by her son, William, and daughter, Monsoon.
Bimla Nanda Bissell, affectionately known as Bim, was the wife of John Bissell, the American founder of FabIndia, which was established in 1960. Her vision and efforts played a crucial role in shaping the company into a platform for Indian artisans, helping them showcase their crafts and secure sustainable livelihoods. Under her leadership, FabIndia became a pioneer in preserving traditional crafts while supporting rural communities.
Before joining FabIndia, Bim had an impressive career in social work and education. She served as social secretary to U.S. ambassadors in New Delhi and worked as an external affairs officer at the World Bank from 1975 to 1996.
In 1992, Bim co-founded Udyogini, an NGO dedicated to empowering landless and assetless women in India. The initiative, supported by the Japanese government and the World Bank, was a testament to her dedication to social causes. Bim also played a role in establishing the Playhouse at Sunder Nursery in Delhi, a popular spot for children.
Bim was known for her distinct style, often seen in handloom sarees paired with silver jewelry, which became her signature look. In a 2020 Instagram post by FabIndia, she expressed her philosophy, saying, “Tradition to me is the best of our heritage. Central to this is the vision of creating and contributing to sustainable livelihoods for artisans and craftspeople, so that the craft tradition stays alive, inclusive and accessible.”
On her passing FabIndia posted, “She loved matching everything, from her accessories to her chappals. A spirited promoter and patron of Fabindia ever since her husband, John, brought his vision of working with India’s craftspeople to life. She kept that vision alive and believed fiercely in what Fabindia stands for.”
Bim Bissell’s work has left an enduring impact on India’s craft community. Her contributions at FabIndia, along with her wider social initiatives, continue to inspire artisans, designers, and entrepreneurs throughout the country.
Bim Bissell is survived by her son, William, and daughter, Monsoon.
