BRIDGEWATER, ME — Border Patrol agents in Houlton, arrested two Indian nationals on August 1 for illegally crossing the border on foot near Bridgewater. The individuals face prosecution and will be placed in removal proceedings, an event considered unique as only 15 Indian nationals have been apprehended in the sector over the previous three fiscal years.
Acting Chief Patrol Agent Craig Shepley of the Houlton Sector emphasized the consequences of illegal entry. “If you cross our borders illegally you will be apprehended, prosecuted and deported back to your country of origin,” Shepley stated.
The news comes as U.S. Customs and Border Protection has introduced a new, incentivized program for voluntary departure. The program allows individuals who are in the U.S. illegally to use the CBP Home app to signal their intent to return home.
Participants may receive a $1,000 stipend, travel assistance, and document support, and are de-prioritized for detention while they prepare to leave.
