SANTA CLARA, CA – Young readers are in for a captivating journey to the Indian state of Meghalaya with the upcoming release of “Living Bridges,” a new children’s picture book by Indian American author Sandhya Acharya. Simon & Schuster will publish the book on June 3, aiming to introduce children aged 4 to 8 to the extraordinary Jingkieng Jri – the region’s famed living root bridges.

Through the eyes of a young local boy, Acharya’s narrative gently unfolds the age-old tradition of shaping these unique bridges from the aerial roots of Ficus trees, a skill passed down through countless generations. As the boy learns this intricate art, his keen observations lead him to notice the growing impact of neglect and tourism on these vital natural structures. This awareness sparks a compelling shift in the story, as it follows his inspiring efforts to rally his community and even engage visiting tourists in the crucial task of preserving these living wonders.

The rich landscapes and cultural nuances of Meghalaya are vividly brought to life through the illustrations of Avani Dwivedi, an accomplished author and illustrator known for her debut book, “My Bollywood Dream,” and a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her artistic vision promises to immerse young readers in the world of these remarkable bridges.

Even before its official release, “Living Bridges” has garnered significant attention, earning positive reviews from respected publications like Kirkus and Booklist, and securing a prestigious selection by the Junior Library Guild.

Author Sandhya Acharya, now residing in Santa Clara, California, draws upon her childhood experiences in India to craft this engaging tale. Her transition from a finance professional to a writer underscores her passion for storytelling and community engagement, which is evident in the book’s underlying message.

Illustrator Avani Dwivedi, who spent her formative years in Navi Mumbai, and later pursued her artistic dreams in the US, currently calls Jersey City, New Jersey, home. Her illustrations often reflect her deep connection to her South-Asian heritage and a distinctive whimsical style.

“Living Bridges” offers more than just a glimpse into a fascinating cultural tradition. It weaves a compelling narrative about environmental responsibility and the power of collective action, encouraging young readers to appreciate the delicate balance between nature and human activity and to become stewards of their own environments.
