LOS ANGELES, CA – Amid escalating tensions over immigration protests in Los Angeles, MAGA Republican Vivek Ramaswamy has ignited a fresh controversy by comparing California Governor Gavin Newsom to George Wallace, the notoriously segregationist Democratic governor of Alabama from the 1960s. Ramaswamy made the stunning comparison during an appearance on Fox News on June 10.

“His behavior is starting to resemble that of another Democratic governor from U.S. history by the name of George Wallace,” Ramaswamy who is running for office in Ohio stated, acknowledging his personal regard for Newsom but asserting that the governor would not “like what I have to say on this.”

Ramaswamy drew direct parallels between the two Democratic leaders’ actions. “The parallels are actually pretty striking if you think about it. Democrat governors,” Ramaswamy charged. “When you look at George Wallace, he resisted desegregation. Gavin Newsom is resisting deportations.” He continued, “George Wallace wanted segregated cities, Gavin Newsom wants sanctuary cities. George Wallace stood in the school door, blocking the way. Gavin Newsom is blocking the ICE vans. It’s the same Democrat governor playbook.”

The historical reference to George Wallace harks back to his infamous stance against civil rights, particularly his physical blockade of two Black students from enrolling at the University of Alabama in 1963. He famously forced President Lyndon B. Johnson to deploy the National Guard in 1965 after refusing to guarantee the safety of civil rights marchers from Selma to Montgomery. This incident marked the last time a president federalized the National Guard against a governor’s wishes until President Donald Trump’s recent actions in Los Angeles.

Newsom, on the same night, likened Trump to “failed dictators” and warned that “other states are next.” Newsom described the federal intervention as “different” from typical unrest, citing the use of “tear gas, flashbang grenades, rubber bullets, federal agents detaining people and undermining their due process rights.”

  • Ramaswami is beating the MAGA drum, whose beat sounds most racist and misogynistic of all time. The treatment of our Senator Padilla of California is a good example of an authoritarian regime comprised of Goondas, Yahoos, and Illiterates. These yahoos have no regard for free speech, academic freedom, and the right to free assembly. They mistreat, insult, and arrest a democratically elected Senator of the largest state of California. What kind of protections are assured for the human rights of common folks in the United States under the most corrupt regime in its history?
