CHICAGO, IL – The Federation of Indian Associations Chicago joined several Indian American organizations in marking the 250th anniversary of American independence with celebrations in Skokie and Schaumburg on July 4.

The day began with a parade in Skokie featuring more than 79 community and business groups and continued with an evening gathering at India Hub in Schaumburg.

FIA organized the celebrations in collaboration with ICNT, India Hub, Sewa International, Ekal, Maharashtra Mandal, United Senior Pariwar, MAFS, UMAS, Care For Soul, Dynasty Care, Happy Hearts and other member organizations.

Among those who participated were FIA President Hemant Patel, Trustee Rakesh Malhotra, ICNT President and FIA Vice President Rohit Joshi, FIA Executive Vice President Anil Singh, Treasurer Amar Upadhyay, Vice Presidents Bhavesh Shah and Joy Shah, Secretary Arvind Ankleshvaria and Joint Treasurer Yashaswini Desai. Other attendees included FIA Chairman Sunil Shah, President Richa Shah, Hitesh Gandhi and Hemendra Shah.

Despite the 82-degree afternoon heat, followed by heavy thunderstorms and street closures caused by flooding later in the day, community members turned out for the celebrations.

Patel said the occasion was an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom. “Patriotic festivals should be a tribute, reflection, and commitment to those who secured our freedom. Freedom is never free, it comes with sacrifice,” Patel said.

Patel also stressed the importance of protecting freedom and democratic values.

Organizers said the celebrations reflected the Indian American community’s gratitude toward the United States while highlighting its strong ties to Indian culture and heritage and its contributions to American society.
